General Principles of Firefighting Flashcards
The most basic principle of firefighting is that
Human life takes precedence over all other concerns
When sufficient personnel are not available to effect both rescue and extinguishment at the same time.
What must be given priority ?
RESCUE
YOU MUST AT ALL TIMES PUT HUMAN LIFE ABOVE PROPERTY LOSS
YOU MUST AT ALL TIMES PUT HUMAN LIFE ABOVE PROPERTY LOSS
LARGER BUILDING WITH 8/10 VICTIMS WHERE THE VICTIMS LOCATION IS UNKNOWN AND YOU WOULD REQUIRE AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH, THE MOST IMPORTANT PRIORITY WOULD BE?
GET THE HOSELINE OPERATING BETWEEN THE FIRE AND THE VICTIMS. PROTECT THE MEANS OF EGRESS SO THAT PEOPLE CAN ESCAPE AND RESCUERS CAN ENTER. THIS STILL PLACES RESCUE AT THE HIGHEST PRIORITY, IT JUST USES A DIFFERENT METHOD TO CONDUCT IT.
WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE SUFFICIENT PERSONNEL TO PERFORM ALL OF THE NEEDED TASKS?
FIRST PERFORM THOSE THAT PROTECT THE GREATEST NUMBER OF HUMAN LIVES
MORE LIVES HAVE BEEN SAVED BY?
PROPERLY POSITIONED AND OPERATED HOSELINES THAN BY ALL OTHER MEANS
THE WORD “SAVABLE” SHOULD BE USED IN DISCUSSION OF LIFE HAZARDS. A PERSON IN A ROOM THAT IS FILLED WITH FIRE?
IS NOT SAVABLE
GENERALLY, THOSE PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE FIRE ARE IN THE GREATEST DANGER AND ?
SHOULD BE REMOVED FIRST
THE NEXT HIGHEST PRIORITY ARE THOSE?
DIRECTLY ABOVE THE FIRE. THEY TOO MUST RECEIVE IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
TOP FLOOR OF THE BUILDING DURING A FIRE?
IS WHERE SMOKE AND HEAT WILL ACCUMULATE MOST RAPIDLY
PEOPLE BELOW THE FIRE FLOOR ARE?
USUALLY THE LAST PRIORITY
AT FIRES WHERE MORE THAN ONE PERSON REQUIRES ASSISTANCE?
REMOVE THOSE IN GREATEST DANGER FIRST. GENERALLY THOSE NEAREST THE FIRE, THEN THOSE ABOVE THE FIRE, AND ANYONE IN PANIC.
WHEN ENOUGH PERSONNEL ARE AVAILABLE TO PERFORM ENGINE AND LADDER FUNCTIONS?
THEY MUST CARRY OUT A COORDINATED FIRE ATTACK
AN AGGRESSIVE, COORDINATED FIRE ATTACK MAY?
REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE LIFE HAZARD
WHAT ARE WAYS TO REDUCE THE LIFE HAZARD?
-REMOVING ALL THE VICTIMS
-VENTING TO DRAW FIRE AWAY FROM THE
VICTIMS, VENTING TO DRAW FIRE AWAY FROM THE VICTIMS OR GIVE THEM FRESH AIR, AND CONFINING THE FIRE TO AN ISOLATED AREA.
