What is goodell’s sign?
Softening of the vagina and cervix due to increased blood flow in pregnancy
What is chadwick’s sign?
Blue-ish discoloration of the labia, vagina and cervix due to increased blood flow in pregnancy
What are the haematological changes in pregnancy?
Increase in red blood cell mass by 20% due to increased EPO and human placental lactogen
Increased WCC
Increase in plasma volume by 40% (2600ml-3800ml)
Resulting in physiological anaemia
Hyper coagulant state (increased clotting factors and fibrinogen)
Normal maternal weight gain in pregnancy
10-15kg
What happens to tidal volume in pregnancy
Increases by 50%
What happens to the expiratory reserve volume in pregnancy?
Decreases by 20%
What components of blood decrease in pregnancy?
Platelet count, clotting factors 11 and 13, protein S
What components of blood increase in pregnancy?
Fibrinogen, clotting factors 7, 8, 9, 10, 12
