General - Oppenheimer Flashcards

1
Q

What is “Electron Spin”?

A

Electron Spin is the total angular momentum of an electron. It’s magnitude is permanent.

Electron’s magnetic fields cause deflection of other electrons independent from their orbit.

Q

Describe the “Wiedman-Franz Law”

A

The ratio of thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity is relative to the temperature.

Originally they are equal but, an increase in temperature increases thermal conductivity while lessening electrical conductivity, and vice versa.

6
Q

Define “High Potential” and “Low Potential” in regards to an atomic physics.

A

“High Potential” is the greater concentration of charges while “Low Potential” is the lower concentration of charges.

Electrons flow from higher to lower potential.

10
Q

Define the “Pauli Exclusion Principle”.

A

Two or more identical particles with half integer spins, for example “fermions”, cannot occupy the same quantum state within a quantum system simultaneously.

For example:

One electron can have a half integer spin upwards and the other downwards = correct. If they both have the same half integer spin upwards OR downwards = incorrect.

Q

What is a “Positron”?

A

It is the positive charge, antimatter counterpart to an electron. When an electron and a positron collide there is annihilation. Also known as an “Anti-electron”.

14
Q

Who was Niehls Bohr?

A

Neils Bohr was a Danish physicist who was most well known for his “Bohr Model” of an atom.

The model depicted electrons in stable orbit around the nucleus but could jump from one energy level to another.

A

Fission is when a neutron slams into a larger atom, forcing it to excite and split into two smaller atoms.

Additional neutrons are released that can cause a chain reaction.
