Speaker
The narrator of the text. Not the author
The context of the speaker is important to consider
Audience
The person or group to whom the words or actions are directed
Types of narration
First person
Second person
Third person
Third person omnicient
God-like, all knowing
Third person limited
Narrator is limited to the inner thoughts of the character, usually the protagonist
Theme
The theme is what the author wants us to know about the general truth of the story
Theme is an idea that is true for most people overtime and across cultures
Theme = Idea/Topic + Opinion
Theme statements
Cannot have first or second person
3-8 words - concise statement
Must be literal - cannot be figurative
Must be universal
