General knowledge turbine engines Flashcards
What is a free turbine on a turboprop ?
A turbine with 2 shafts ( 1 connected to compressor and 1 connected to propeller )
What are the 2 types of compressors ?
- Centrifugal/Radial
* Axial
What are the 2 purposes of the diffusers ?
- Diffusers are used to reduce velocity and increase pressure of air before it reaches combustion chambers.
- Reduce the rotation of the air
What are the two main components of the compressor ?
Rotors ( rotates )
Stators ( in between each stage of rotors )
What are the 2 purposes of the stators ?
o Reduce the chance of compressor stalls
o Reduce the rotation of the air
What happens to the airflow during compressor stall ?
The airflow either decrease or stop going backward.
What happens to the Inner Turbine Temperature when you have a compressor stall ?
The temperature increase
To avoid compressor stall what do we use ?
variable stator vanes
What are the 4 types of turbo engines ?
Turbofan
Turbojet
Turboprop
Turboshaft
What are the 4 ways of starting an engine ?
- Air cart
- Electric Starter ( GPU or Battery )
- Bleed air coming from the other engine
- Auxiliary power unit
What are the 2 types of reversers ?
- Clamshell
* Coldstreal reversers
What is the FADEC ?
Full Authority Digital Electronic Control
What are the advantages of the FADEC ?
Better fuel efficiency
Reduce the number of parameters to be monitored by flight crews
Automatic engine protection
Provide semi automatic engine starting
Provide engine long-term health monitoring and diagnostics / trend monitoring ( manually by the pilot )
What are the disadvantages of the FADEC ?
o If FADEC fails the engine fails
o High system complexity
o High system development and validation
o When in crisis a non-FADEC engine can produce more thrust
What are the 4 purposes of the accessory gearbox ?
- Electronic Motor to start the engine
- Electric Generator
- Hydraulic pump
- Fuel control unit, fuel pump and oil pump for the engine
