General Knowledge Flashcards
What is a gyrocompass?
An instrument that combines magnetic compass and heading indicator.
It is not subject to compass turning errors, or to gyroscopic precession.
How is the pressure controlled in the cabin of a pressurized aircraft?
By controlling the air leaving the cabin.
When do you use the spark plug in a turbine engine?
Only at startup.
For safety purposes, it is also engaged during T/O and landing, and during turbulences or precipitations.
What viscosity would cause an increase in oil temperature?
A too low viscosity oil.
With low visc. the oil pressure would be too low, therefore not properly doing its cooling purpose.
What is the purpose of mass balance?
To reduce / eliminate the risk of vibration in the controls.
Carb icing T° range?
-5°C to 30°C
Vref formula? (flare speed)
1,3Vsosqroot(landing weight / MTOW)
What are the angles of the valve lead?
- Intake valve opens 15° earlier
- Exhaust valve opens 70° earlier
With a light wind over the runway, what would happen to the vortices?
- Lateral movement of upwind vortices is decreased : it will stay over the RWY for a while
- Lateral movement of downwind vortices is increased : it will move to another RWY
[ WEATHER ] How do surface winds blow at a stationary front?
Parallel to the front
In a turbojet engine, how much of the energy created in the combustion chamber is used to drive the compressor turbine?
About 85%
What are the heights of upper level charts?
850 hPa > 5,000ft
700 hPa > 10,000ft
500 hPa > 18,000ft
250 hPa > 34,000ft
In a turbine engine, how much of the air is used for combustion? And what is the air/fuel ratio?
30% of the intake air is used for combustion.
Air/fuel ratio is the chemically correct one : 15/1
Define the practical ceiling of an aircraft
The DENSITY altitude at which the RoC is 100ft/min or less
When is it more critical to reduce induced drag with wingtips?
During climb and cruise
