General Knowledge #4 Flashcards
What is a soluble compound?
a compound which is able to dissolve in water
What is an insoluble compound?
a compound that does not dissolve in water
What is water made up of?
Water is made up of H 2O molecules. The hydrogen (H) atoms in the water molecules are attracted to the anions in an ionic compound, and the oxygen (O) atoms in the water molecules are attracted to the cations.
What is recrystallisation?
when water is removed from a saturated solution by evaporation, the ions dissolved in the solution can start to stick together again.
What happens when ionic compounds are dissolved in solution?
the cations and anions are no longer held together by the strong ionic bonds, they are free to move around the solution. Solutions containing freely moving ions (charged particles) are able to conduct electricity
What are electrodes?
electrical conductors through which electricity can flow. They are usually wires or metal plates. The electrodes also need to be connected to a battery
