Q

Explain group rating system

A

Both aircraft and runways have a group rating.

The worse the T/O and Landing performance of the aircraft, the higher the rating.

The better the runway, the higher the rating.

Aircraft may take off from an runway greater than or equal the group rating.

16
Q

What is an impulse coupling?

A

The impulse coupling is part of the magneto and helps to rotate the magneto fast enough to produce a good spark at startup and to retard the timing of the spark during the start cycle

17
Q

What are the functions of oil in an engine?

A

Cooling, Reduces friction, Protects, Sealing, Cleaning

18
Q

How long do you have legally to log a flight

A

1 week after the flight, except int’l, in which case it’s 14 days (Part 61)

19
Q

What are the VFR met minima in class C, D, and E airspace?

A

Part 91 defines the met minima.

In class C, D, or E controlled airspace, the met minima are:

Distance from cloud:
2km horizontal distance from cloud, 1000ft vertically outside CTZ, 500ft inside CTZ

Visibility:
5km below 10,000ft; 8km above 10,000ft

20
Q

What part defines how to report an incident?

A

Part 12 - Accidents, Incidents, Statistics

21
Q

How old do you have to be for a PPL in NZ?

A

17 years

22
Q

What is the minimum equipment required for aircraft?

A
  • Airspeed indicator
  • Altimeter
  • Compass
  • Fuel tank gauge
  • Engine tacho (RPMs)
  • Oil pressure gauge / Coolant temp gauge
  • Oil temperature if engine rated over 250HP
  • Manifold pressure if super/turbocharged or constant-speed
  • CHT if over 250HP
  • Flap position indicator unless visual inspection possible
  • Landing gear position
  • Ammeter
  • CO monitor
23
Q

What is a trigger NOTAM?

A

A trigger NOTAM is used to notify of certain long term changes and amendments and is usually issued 28 days in advance

24
Q

What is a cloud base / ceiling?

A

Cloud base is the height above ground of the lowest layer of cloud; Cloud ceiling is the height above ground of the lowest cloud layer that covers half of the sky

25
Q

Define cloud cover words?

A

FEW - 1-2 octas
SCT - 3-4 octas
BKN - 5-7
OVC - 8 octas

26
Q

What type of flap does our AC have?

A

A slotted flap - similar to a plain flap, but a gap exists between the wind and the flap to force high pressure air over the surface of the wing. This helps reduce boundary layer separation

27
Q

PPL Requirements

A
  • 17 Years
  • Medical
  • Minimum 50h flight experience if seeking to exercise XC, otherwise 40h
  • Night time training
  • Exam credits
