What should you do with a fire extinguisher once a month to keep it in ship shape?
you should shake the fire extinguisher forcefully in an upside down position at least once a month
Explain under way vs making way
Making way” means the vessel is making way through water. If the vessel is drifting and moving with current, she is underway but not making way.
underway is in motion : not at anchor or aground The ship was underway at dawn.
What does it mean if, in restricted visibility, you hear a single, long blast (either horn or whistle or other…)
Boat is under power, under way and making way
What does it mean if, in restricted visibility, you hear 2 long blasts
Under power, under way and not making way
What does it mean if, in restricted visibility, you hear 1 long, 2 short blasts?
Not under command, drifting, fishing, trawling
Regarding sound signaling, what boats must be equipped with a permanently fitted whistle?
Boats of 12 meters long or more
Regarding sound, boats of 20 meters long or more must be fitted with what?
A bell
What size boats must be fitted with a bell?
20 meters or more
what do these sound signals mean… 1 short, 2 short, 3 short, 5 short, 1 long
I short - altering course to starboard 2 short = Altering course to port 3 short = Operating astern propulsion 5 short — — Danger 1 long = Large boat leaving the dock
What fire extinguisher type is good against wood fire/paper fire?
Type A
What fire extinguisher type is good against gas fire, grease oil, paint or chemical inflammables?
Type B
What fire extinguisher type is good against a fire in the engine, or on cables?
Type C
Sailboards, kiteboards, paddleboats, watercycles, kayaks and paddleboards must have what?
A sound signaling device and, if operated at night, a watertight flashlight
Do all vessels require radar reflectors?
No, only boats 20m or less and also it is not required if it is not essential for the safety of the vessel or impractical to mount
True or False: a pleasure craft is required to have a radar reflector
False, it is not required if it’s not essential to the safety of the vessel or impractical to mount. If you are operating your vessel in limited traffic conditions, daylight hours and in favourable environmental conditions, a radar reflector is not needed because it isn’t essential to the boat’s safety.
The small size of your boat and/or its operation away from radar navigation and large shipping lanes might make having a radar reflector impracticable and, therefore, is not needed.
