Externalisation
A process in which the pursuit of self-interest by one group threatens prerogatives of others jeopardising the good of all.
Multilateralism
An opposition to bilateralism and unilateralism: Indicates a form of cooperation between at least 3 states (in pursuit of a common goal).
Draconian Law
Particularly harsh or severe law - used in relation to laws + penalties or to their unreasonable application to minor crimes/infringements.
Altruism
The disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others.
Framing theory
The concept of this theory is that issues can be viewed from multiple perspectives.
Institutional theory
Focuses on how institutions and organisations play a crucial role in shaping society, economics, politics, etc. Institutions themselves are defined as collective entities comprised of rules, norms, and social structure.
Functionalism
A theory based on the premise that all aspects of a society—institutions, roles, norms, etc. —serve a purpose and that all are indispensable for the long-term survival of the society.
Discursive institutionalism
Emphasises the importance of ideas + their capacity to inspire change (associated with political scientist Vivien Schmidt).
