The Picture of Dorian Gray is a book written by Oscar Wilde in 1890. Dorian Gray is the subject of a full-length portrait in oil who expresses the desire to sell his soul, to ensure that the picture, rather than he, will age and fade. Dorian pursues a life of varied and amoral experiences, while staying young and beautiful, while his portrait ages and records every sin. Dorian goes back to his picture and it has become so hideous he can not recognize himself. Deciding that only full confession will absolve him of wrongdoing, Dorian decides to take a knife and stab the picture. On entering the locked room, the servants find an unknown old man, stabbed in the heart, his face and figure withered. The servants identify the disfigured corpse by the rings on its fingers which belonged to Dorian. Beside him is the picture, restored to its original beauty.
