Who was Schoenberg?
He was an Austrian composer who founded the Second Viennese School which consisted of a group of composers who wrote expressionist music, including the likes of Berg and Webern
When did expressionism arise and what was the aim of it?
It was an early 20th century movement that aimed to express feelings as intently as possible
What type of music has no key?
Atonal music
When was Peripetie composed and what movement was it from?
It was composed in 1909 and was the fourth piece from ‘Five Orchestral Pieces’
What does Peripetie mean?
A sudden reversal - the ideas at the start of the piece return in reverse order towards the end
What does ‘a 2 or a 3’ mean?
All 2 or all 3 bassoons (for example) should play the same notes
What does ‘divisi’ mean?
The players playing their part of the score at this point should divide into groups
What does ‘bell up’ mean?
The brass player should point the end of their instrument upwards to produce a loud, strident sound
What does ‘1 solo’ mean?
A single person should play the line
What does ‘tutti’ mean?
Everyone joins in again
What does ‘+’ mean?
Hand-stopped - the horn player inserts their hand further than usual into the bell
What does tremolo mean?
The note is rapidly repeated
What does Haupstimme mean?
The most important part
What does Nebenstimme mean?
The second most important part
