Sweeter reds, with a little fizz. Cold winters would stop fermentation, resuming in Spring.

1840’s dry reds became normal

When did the modern era of Barolo begin? What types of things happened?

A

In the late 1960’s early 70’s, producers like Gaja and Renato Ratti began championing site specificity, whereas before Barolo was always a blend from multiple sites.

Modernists like Elio Altare and Enrico Scavino also started tinkering with smaller newer barriques, amongst other things, making wines that could be consumed easier, and younger.
