General Energy Facts & Definitions Flashcards
What is secondary energy?
Primary energy that is converted into a more convenient form. Eg electricity
Define energy security.
The extent to which a country can achieve affordable, reliable and stable energy supply. It is the ability to meet all the national energy needs regardless of any events that might threaten that ability.
What is energy mix?
The different sources of energy that a country uses in meeting its energy needs.
What are non-renewable sources?
Fuels of limited supply which produce CO2 during combustion. Eg coal, oil and natural gas
What are renewable sources?
Sustainable fuels which can be regenerated on a human timescale. They do not produce carbon dioxide or directly contribute to atmospheric pollution. Eg solar, wind, HEP
What are recyclable sources?
Fuels which have renewable stock which, with careful management, can be replaced. Eg biomass and biofuels, nuclear
Define energy poverty.
When demand far exceeds internal sources of energy.
What are energy pathways?
Routes along which energy sources are transported from producer to consumer.
How much is global demand for energy expected to rise by between 2002 and 2030?
60%
How much did global demand for energy increase by between 1960 and 1980?
It doubled
How many people in the world lack access to household electricity?
2 billion
Traditional biomass accounts for what percentage of energy consumption in developing countries?
90%
What is primary energy?
Energy found in natural resources. Eg oil
