General Drawing Definitions: Flashcards
Any of the four side views: front, back, right, and left.
Elevation view
Viewed from above or top view. Shows only length and width.
Plan view
A drawings that appears 3 dimensional because it shows length, width and height.
Isometric View
l – A close-up (or zoomed in) view of a specific area or piece of equipment to give the installer more information than available in the plan view. A detail sheet in a drawing typically contains as few as 2 or as many as 25 details.
Detail
In plumbing drawings this chart describes the type of fixture and may include the part number, location and required water supply.
Fixture schedule
When a drawing cannot fit on one page the building footprint will be divided up into multiple drawings.
Key plan
This chart is usually at the beginning of the set of drawings and explains what symbols are used in the drawings and what they mean.
Legend
An arrow or star in the corner of a drawing that tells you where plan north or true north is in relation to the building or drawing.
Compass
This version of north is chosen to align with part of the construction site or building. It gives a directional reference point to orient yourself on the site. See True North.
Plan north
the direction as determined by the earth’s magnetic north pole. This direction may happen to line up with Plan North but frequently is slightly different.
