General definitions Flashcards
What is the function of CRP?
CRP is an acute phase protein, produced in the liver, to opsonise pathogens and activate the complement cascade.
What cells form the innate immune system?
APCs - Mast, dendritic and macrophage
Phagocytes - neutrophils and macrophages
Granulocytes - neutrophils, eosinophils, mast, basophils
What is a cytokine?
A soluble tissue factor that has chemical signals to modulate cell activity and attract cells with chemokines
What is the function of the complement cascade?
Opsonisation
MAC formation
Activation and chemoattraction
What are the acute phase proteins?
IL-1, IL-6 and TNFalpha
Which cytokines suppress an immune response?
TGFbeta and IL-10
What cells make up the adaptive immune system?
B cells and T cells and high affinity antibodies
What is the difference between innate and adaptive immune response?
Innate:
Rapid, no memory, low specificity, pre-programmed identical response
Adaptive:
Specific, antibody memory, slower
What cells are derived from the lymphoid lineage?
B and T lymphocytes and DC cells.
Mostly associated with adaptive immunity.
What cells are derived from the myeloid lineage?
Erythrocytes, monocyte/macrophage, eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils.
Associated with the innate immune system.
