General Deck Flashcards
There are three radio navigation systems available for use for VFR navigation. These are:
VOR, NDB, GPS
What does VOR stand for?
VHF (Very High Frequency) Omnidirectional Range
What is a VOR?
VOR is a type of radio navigation system used by pilots it provides magnetic bearing information to determine their aircraft’s position TO and FROM a station, and stay on course.
The VOR system is present in three slightly different navigation aids (NAVAIDs):
- VOR
- VOR/DME
- VORTAC
What is a radial?
A radial is defined as a line of magnetic bearing extending outward from the VOR station.
VORs and VORTACs are classed according to operational use. There are three classes:
- T (Terminal)
- L (Low altitude)
- H (High altitude)
What are the normal usable altitudes and radius distances of a VOR/VORTAC Navaids.
The following means are provided for pilots to check VOR accuracy:
- FAA VOR test facility (VOT)
- Certified airborne checkpoints
- Certified ground checkpoints located on airport surfaces
What are the two components required for VOR Radio Navigation?
Ground transmitter and aircraft
receiving equipment.
What does CDI stand for?
Course Deviation Indicator
What does HSI mean?
Horizontal Situation Indicator
What does ADF stand for?
Automatic Direction Finder
What does RMI stand for?
Radio Magnetic Indicator
What does DME stand for?
Distance Measuring Equipment
What is bearing?
Refers to the direction or angle from a specific point, usually the aircraft, to a VOR station.
