General Concepts and Principles of Ventilation Flashcards
Define Eupnea
Normal rhythmic breathing
Define Hyperpnea
Increased breathing Typically refers to increased tidal volume with or without increased frequency
Define Tachypnea
Increased frequency of breathing
Define Hyperventilation
Increased alveolar ventilation relative to metabolic rate (Arterial CO2 tension usually less than 37 mmHg)
Define Hypoventilation
Decreased alveolar ventilation relative to metabolic rate (Arterial CO2 tension is usually above 43 mmHg)
Define Apneusis
Cessation of breathing in inspiration (Holding your breath)
Define Apnea
Cessation of breathing in the resting expiratory position
Apneustic pattern
Apneusis interrupted periodically by exhalation May be rhythmic
What fills the pleural cavity?
Pleural fluid
