General CNS and Paralysis Flashcards
Parkinson’s Disease
Idiopathic Neurodegenerative condition of the midbrain affecting motor control, coordination and gait patterns
Transient Ischemic Attack
Ministroke – temporary decrease of blood supply to part of the brain
Spastic Paralysis
Causes muscles to spasm or twitch, muscles become tight and hard
Diplegia
Paralysis that affects the same area on both sides of the body.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Autoimmune disease that attacks the Myelin Sheath around the axons of neurons in the Central Nervous System
Cerebral Palsy
Neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from a permanent but non-progressive injury to the brain sustained in early development
Spina Bifida
A neural tube defect in which the spine or spinal cord never closes completely
Hemiplegia
Paralysis that affects one arm and lone leg on the same side of the body.
Stroke
Blood supply to one part of the brain is interrupted or reduced preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen
FASTER
Stroke
F= Face; A= Arms; S=Stability; T=Talking; E=Eyes; R= React
React- call 9-1-1 immediately
Paraplegia
paralysis from the waist down
Quadriplegia / Tetraplegia
paralysis in both arms and both legs
Monoplegia
paralysis in one arm or one leg
