General Care Guidelines Flashcards
Section 2
1
Q
Establish IV Access for these reasons (There are three of them)
A
- To administer pre-hospital medications
- Fluid replacement
- Patient’s condition is likely to deteriorate before arriving at the hospital.
2
Q
Pre-Existing vascular access devices (PVAD) may be used only if:
A
- The patient is in cardiac arrest
- There is an emergent need to administer fluids or IV medications and a peripheral IV cannot be established and an IO is NOT appropriate due to the patient’s condition.
3
Q
Airway Management (BLS)
A
- Open airway using chin-lift or jaw thrust. Protect c-spine when potential exists.
- Suction if indicated.
- Use OPA or NPA as needed to maintain a patent airway.
- Assist ventilations as needed using a BVM + 100% O@. Ventilate at a rate of 20/min for pediatrics. 40-60 for newborns. Ventilate until visible chest rise and fall.
- If a patient age 18 (see that it is 18 here) is in respiratory arrest with no gag reflex, insert an appropriate sized non-visualized airway if available.
4
Q
Airway Management (ALS)
A
Secure airway if there is a risk of aspiration or vomiting in an unconscious patient. Intubate adults with an ETT or non-visualized patient.
BVM ventilation is the preferred method for ventilating a pediatric patient. If cannot be adequately performed using BVM, place non-visualized airway. If non-visualized airway fails, proceed to endotracheal intubation
