both are based on Dracula, but obv the name is different, Dracula is more freely moving and it is not obvious he is a monster. nosferatu returns to vampire histories’ roots
what does it mean “what’s old is new in nosferatu” is said
the added context of literature folklore and history is OLD vampire history but new with nosferatu, as it was not in Dracula

sound, mis en scene, editing, and cinematography `
what does mis en scene include

what does cinematography include
cuts, perspective, lenses– anything the camera does
what does sound include
sound beyond the frequency we can hear, diegetic and non diegetic, silence, score
what does editing include
cuts, how many or few
zone of interest sound specifics
the film you see vs. the film you hear. stereo sound aka front wall– flattened. sounds of machinery rather than sounds of dying. implied violence instead. the sounds gradually get louder throughout the film so that you cant tune out the background noise. sound has primal reaction that elicits feeling before thought
what is acousmatic sound
sound that is outside of the character for but they still can hear it
the music in zone of interest
the score puts us in and takes us out of the film, plays a role in sensationalization. takes u to a place below or beyond what you are seeing. disruptive, guttural sonic punctures convey buried embodied responses like nausea and guilt. music cant seem to stay in the same key– ears first, feels unnatural.
the zone of interest and similarities to haneke
the zone of interest is an ethical interrogation on the refusal to listen– refusal to communicate is what haneke does
what is sunbeams
the song played on the piano by the polish girl, written by a jewish survivor of auschwitz.
how did expressionism continue in golden era Hollywood horror
many filmmakers flee Germany and become part of golden era in Hollywood. hybridizing genre and milking audience for all theyre worth with films
what is genrefication
making similar films and sequels at a furious rate, mass production model. conventions, given meaning only by adjacency
what is affect
fear of unease, discomfort, anxiety, shock, disgust, revulsion. general ineffable block of sensation. may differ depending on genre
does affect or emotion come first
