General Flashcards
What is the function of the basal ganglia?
Movement
What is input to basal ganglia?
All areas of cerebral cortex
Output?
Thalamus
What is the relationship between the basal ganglia and thalamus?
Basal ganglia keeps the thalamus under control
It either takes the brakes off the thalamus so it can excite the cerebral cortex or puts the brakes on the thalamus so it sends less excitatory info to the cortex
What are the three functional loops?
Motor loop
Associative loop
Limbic loop
What are the two pathways controlling input to basal ganglia?
Direct
Indirect
What does the thalamus loop back to?
Cortex
What is the striatum?
Caudate nucleus
Putamen nucleus
What is found medial to the Putamen?
Globus pallidus
What are the two types of globus pallidus?
Internus globus pallidus
External globus pallidus
What is found in the upper part of the midbrain?
Substantia nigra
What is found at the end of the thalamus?
Medial geniculate nucleus
Where does the motor loop come from?
Primary motor cortex
Where does the associative loop come from?
Frontal cortex
Where does the limbic loop come from?
Limbic system
