- When a member has been reassigned, they will remain in their new assignment throughout the duration of the pregnancy, until placed on authorized leave, or released to full duty by their physician.

After a employee has told their supervisor that they are pregnant. What should that supervisor do?
1.Inform the employee of the Transitional Work Program (Management Policy #310) and the Family and Medical Leave Act, Management Policy #345.
2. Inform the employee of City of Mesa Personnel Rules Section 441 (Special Leaves without Pay) and Section 442 (FMLA).
3. After a decision has been made by the employee regarding transitional work status, the Fire Department Personnel and Wellness Section will assign the employee to a transitional work position, if appropriate and available.
4. Coordinate with the Battalion Chief regarding personnel replacement for member.

What must a employee do to come back to work after having a baby?
After delivery, the employee is expected to get medical clearance before beginning strenuous activity. Additionally, the employee is encouraged to seek fitness advice from a certified trainer or the Department’s Wellness Captain. The employee must have approval in writing from her physician to return to active duty with a Work Status Summary Form, which is available at the bottom of the Wellness Division’s home page.

What should be done to report a Near Miss incident?(Read only)
Members who witness or have a role in a near miss should report the incident either by contacting a BSO immediately or through the Near Miss Report located on the MFMD Safety InsideMesa page.
Fill out and submit the information, following the directions on the form.
BSO’s are responsible for conducting the discovery phase of near miss reviews. Members should expect to be interviewed and asked to recall as much about the incident as possible. Event identifiers will be scrubbed and every effort to maintain anonymity will be made.
Discovery information will be forwarded to the Safety Team for peer analysis. After peer analysis the division in which the incident took place will be charged with developing a communications plan for disseminating the findings to all members and making any alterations to training or procedures.

What should be done if a member is injured or has an exposure?(Read only)
All member injuries and exposures, minor or severe, that happen while conducting COM business shall be reported to the member’s supervisor. If necessary, an EMS case shall be started through MFMD Alarm for patient care purposes. Medical care shall not be delayed for reporting purposes.
All injuries and exposures shall be reported to the closest Battalion Chief and Battalion Safety Officer through the Alarm Room Supervisor at 480-521-4275.
The closest BSO will guide members through reporting procedures and will work with the member’s supervisor to ensure injuries and exposures are handled appropriately.
