General Flashcards
What are 5 things that define a parasite?
- Different species to host
- Intimate association, inside or on host body
- dependent on host, metabolically or physiologically
- Recognised by host as foreign
- Harmful
6 types of parasitism
- endoparasite
- ectoparasite
- microparasite (protozoa, bacteria, virus)
- macroparasite (eg worms)
- Obligate parasite (always parasitic for part of the lifecycle)
- facultative parasite (will be parasitic if opportunity arises)
what are direct and indirect transmission cycles?
Direct - one host, with no intermediate host, monogenetic
Indirect - involves intermediate hosts
define: definitive host
intermediate host
vector
definitive - in which parasite undergoed sexual reproduction
intermediate - in which parasite develops/multiplies asexually
vector - micropredator which actively delivers parasite to nest host.
What is Zoonosis?
disease naturally transmitted between VERTEBRATE animals and humans
what are advantages of a parasiticlifecylce?
Stable environment
food freely available
what are disadvantages of a parasitic lifecycle?
have to find new host
have to find developmental site in host
need to avoid host defences
