General Flashcards
What is autologous cell therapy?
Stem cells are removed from a person, stored, and later given back to that same person.
What is allogeneic cell therapy?
Stem cells are removed from a person, stored and then given to a different person.
What are the benefits of autologous cell therapy?
Immunocompatibility
What are the problems with marketing allogeneic cell therapy?
People are iffy over cells from another person.
What are the 5 main stages involved with cell therapy? H.S.A.S.A
Harvesting stem cells. Selection of desired cells. Amplicification. Screening. Administration.
Amplification and screening stages reversed?
What are iPS?
Induced pluripotent stem cells (also known as iPS cells or iPSCs) are a type of pluripotent stem cell that can be generated directly from adult cells.
What are the problems with iPS?
Tumorigenicity.
Integration of gene delivery vectors and transgenes into host cells. Chromosomal damage, clonal expansion of oncogenic cells, incomplete reprogramming, DNA damage accumulation.
What is the Encaptra drug delivery system?
It is a biological/artificial device for diabetes treatment.
It is a semi-permeable containment barrier surrounding a cell therapy. This cell therapy can output insulin, amylin, glucagon etc and use nutritional inputs such as glucose, O2, proteins etc.
What is xenotransplantation?
Transplantation of living cells, organs or tissues from one species to another.
What are the main problems with xenotransplantation?
Immune rejection,
Life span issues (low)
Cross-species infections.
What are the main problems with transplants in general?
Immune rejections.
