3 Ways Crucible is comparable to modern times
1- Mass hysteria
2- Unchecked power and abuse of authority
3- Scapegoating (pushing blame onto others)
Mass Hysteria
Girls start accusing other of witchcraft which created a wave of fear. Forced many innocent people into confessing
With social media and cancel culture, people could be accused of anything without proper investigation. “Viral” media can quickly spread false information
Unchecked Power
Many of the Judges have obvious bias towards the girls, and fail to observe other perspectives. Judges use fear to manipulate citizens of Salem.
Politicians today are guilty of using their authority to promote their own beliefs and interests instead of properly using their power to represent the people. (Ron Desantis and book banning)
Scapegoating
Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch to get with John Proctor. Many towns people accuse other of witchcraft to escape their own wrong doings.
Ethnic scapegoating- Certain groups accused of societal issues, Jews blamed for Germany’s societal and political issues at the time of the Holocaust.
