More than 4mm of spacing
What is mild crowding?

When should you be able to palpate for canines palatally?
From age 9
When should you be worried that you cannot feel canines?
By age 11- or when C’s have exfoliated
Take Anterior maxillary occlusal radiograph to see for ectopic canines
What is the ugly duckling stage?
Transient spacing of the upper 1’s may occur due to the close proximity of their roots to the erupting 2’s and 3’s
What can ectopic canines resorb?
The central incisors in 15%
Lateral incisors in upto 66%
When is extracting the c’s to encourage eruption of ectopic canines likely to be successful?
Patient is between 10-13 years old
Canine is distal to the midline of the upper lateral incisor
There is sufficient space
After extraction wait 12 months for eruption then reassess
What can you do if you need between 1-3mm of space?
Stripping is used where metal sand paper is placed between the teeth and removes some enamel for space
