General Flashcards
Explain the low reactivity of noble gases and trend in boiling points
Noble gases have low reactivity because they already have noble gas structure (full outer shell) and the trend in boiling point decreases from helium to argon, but past it it increases
Alkali Metals reacting with water
Metal + water = Metal(OH) + Hydrogen (2)
State the names of each group on the periodic table
Alkali Metals, Alkali Earth Metals, Transition Metals, metalloid, non-metal, halogens, noble gases
How to identify displacement in a halogen displacement experiment
When halogen water is distributed in test tubes, it should present yellow/brown for signs of displacement
Why has the ordering of elements changed overtime
Because new discoveries are made and new theories are developed to explain the behaviour of chemicals
How are group 1 metals stored and why
In an airtight container with mineral oil. This is to prevent water entering and for the metals to be oxidised
Properties of halogens
Goes darker as you go down the group, boiling point increases as you go down.
Properties of transition metals and their compounds.
Hard, dense, shiny and malleable and ductile. React with water slowly and can form coloured compounds
