general Flashcards
definition of complete injury
an injury with no spared motor or sensory function below the affected level.
definition of Neurogenic shock
hypotension & relative bradycardia in a patient with an acute spinal cord injury,
circulatory collapse from loss of sympathetic tone
definition of Spinal shock
Temporary loss of spinal cord function and reflex activity below the level of a spinal cord injury. (neurons become hyperpolarized and unresponsive to stimuli from brain)
stages of spinal shock
Phase 1 - hyporeflexia 0-48H
Phase 2 - initial reflex return 1-2D (polysynaptic return )
Phase 3 -hyperreflexia 1-3W
Phase 4 - spasticity 1-12M
anterior cord syndrome
involves a variable loss of motor function and pain and/or temperature sensation, with preservation of proprioception
Brown-Sequard syndrome
involves an ipsilateral loss of proprioception and motor function, with contralateral loss of pain and temperature sensation
posterior cord syndrome
characterized by preservation of motor function, sense of pain, and light touch, with loss of proprioception and temperature sensation below the level of the lesion
central cord syndrome
lags more than hands
lost: motor , pain,tempruter
preserved : proprioception
