General Flashcards
The higher or lower the enthalpy the more feasible the reaction is
Lower
What is usually produced in reversible reactions
Gases
Dynamic equilibrium definition
The equilibrium that exists in a closed system when the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction
What 2 important conditions are needed for dynamic equilibrium
Closed container or system
Must be reversible
Usually high temperatures
A + B <—> C + D
Draw the forwards and backward reaction
A+B —> C + D
C + D —> A + B
Describe how a reaction gets to equilibrium
A + B react fast producing enough C + D for the reverse reaction.
The rate of the forward reaction decreases as there are fewer reactants and the rate of the backwards reaction increases as there is more C+D.
This will reach a point where both reactions are occurring at the same rate.
What happens at equilibrium with rates of reactions
Forward and backwards reaction continuously ocur
What are the concentrations like at dynamic equilibrium
Concentrations of products and reactants do not change but dont have to be the same
Define le chateliers principle
When a system in dynamic equilibrium is subject to an external change, the system readjusts to minimise the extent of this change and to restore equilibrium.
If there is a shift to the RHS what is produced more
Products
If there is a shift to the left hand sand what is produced more
Reactants
When the backwards reaction is favoured where does the equilibrium shift
