This is sung after the unsuccessful uprising against the establishment and monarchy.
Marius is an idealistic student, and although he did not fully share the republican cause.
He used to enjoy the company of the student revolutionaries who would meet at the ABC CAFÉ.
When Marius thought he would no longer be able to see Cosette, he joined the student rebellion in despair, and was injured, though he managed to survive. Most of the students lost their lives.
