what are the general principles involved in controlling the expression of a gene by controlling transcription?

A

– gene is switched on by transcription factors
– each transcriptional factor has a site that binds to a specific base sequence of the DNA on the nucleus
– when it binds it causes the region of DNA to begin transcription
– messenger RNA is produced and info it carries is translated into a polypeptide
– when a gene is not being expressed the site on the transcription factor that binds to DNA is not active
– cannot cause transcription and polypeptide synthesis
