Q

Ruether argues that Jesus was not the Messiah expected. How is this so?
(Challenge to the Male Warrior-Messiah Expectation)

A
  • Was a servant king – serving his people rather than ruling over them. He warned his disciples of lording over others = washing of feet.
  • Attended to the poor and dispossessed rather the highest in social order.
  • Was critical of Jewish authorities (e.g Temple authorities) and the reigning powers such as the Roman ruler Pontius Pilate

Q

What does Ruether argue Jesus as Messiah links to?

Challenge to the Male Warrior-Messiah Expectation

A

Although Christianity has a male symbol of the Messiah, Ruether argues that the Messiah concept is not the Davidic military messiah but a self sacrificing, redeeming, servant Messiah who is linked to the female notion of wisdom.

  2. God is associated with wisdom and wisdom again is female

Q

How has Christianity changed the idea of ‘Sophia’?

God as the Female Wisdom Principle

A

However, Christianity has merged the notion of divine wisdom into the notion of messianic king. In this process the idea of female wisdom has become obscured behind a patriarchal veil of the male Messiah - Jesus

Q

Who challenges Ruether’s views?

Challenges to Ruether’s views

A

Simon Chan

17
Q

What does Simon Chan argue?

Challenges to Ruether’s views

A

You cannot rewrite Christianity to give more prominence to women because it is the story itself that shapes Christian identity e.g., the phrase ‘almighty Father’ is engrained within the Catholic Church’s Eucharistic prayer. To rewrite these central prayers to downplay the ‘maleness’ would be wrong.

18
Q

How is Christianity unique?

Challenges to Ruether’s views

A

Most ancient religions had a goddess at their centre. Therefore, using female language for God does not make society less patriarchal and using male language for God does not make it more patriarchal.

19
Q

“Devotion to the goddess Kali in Hinduism, for instance…”

Challenges to Ruether’s views

A

“has never resulted in better treatment of women.”
