Gender inequality Flashcards
Bangladesh case study:
How are girls viewed?
What do a lot of poor families do as result of this?
As an economic burden.
Sell them, often as child brides.
Is there anything in place to prevent this type of exploitation?
In Bangladesh, it is illegal for women to get married under the age of 18. (Age of consent)
Despite this law there is little to no regulation and therefore many child marriages occur daily.
What does this mean for the girls?
They are pulled away from education and therefore have little to no job prospects. This economic dependency on husband makes them extremely vulnerable to domestic abuse. (Those married before 18 are twice as more likely to suffer)
What can this lead to?
Meaning?
A ‘care deficit’.
Each year millions of women leav LICs to work abroad as nannies, maids and sex workers. This can also lead to sex trafficking and slavery issues.
