What does the term “universality” mean?
The concept that psychological principles or findings apply to all people, regardless of gender and culture
What does the term “bias” mean?
Systematic distortion in research due to various factors, such as gender or cultural perspective
What does the term “gender bias” mean?
The tendency to favour one gender over another in research or theory
What does the term “androcentrism” mean?
The practice of placing male experiences at the centre of psychological research, often leading to the marginalisation of female perspectives
What does the term “alpha bias” mean?
When the difference between genders is exaggerated, often leading to stereotypes and inequalities
What does the term “beta bias” mean?
When differences between genders are minimised or ignored, leading to assumptions that findings apply to both genders equally
What does the term “cultural bias” mean?
The tendency of others to interpret and evaluate phenomena based on one’s own cultural norms
What does the term “ethnocentrism” mean?
The viewing of one’s own culture as the standard and judging other cultures against it, often leading to negative evaluations of other cultures
What does the term “cultural relativism” mean?
The principle that psychological practices and theories should be understood within the cultural context in which they occur, without imposing external standards
