Q

What is an example of alpha bias?

A

Wilson (1975) believed that the evolutionary theory of relationship formation focused on ‘survival efficiency.’

It is in a male’s interest to try and impregnate as many women as
possible due to his unlimited fertility.

For the female, her best chance is to ensure a healthy survival of her offspring, and must be picky rather promiscuous.

Sexual promiscuity in males is genetically determined while females engaging in similar activity is deemed unacceptable.

A

Berry argues that psychology is guilty of imposed etics by only studying one particular culture in studies (e.g. Ainsworth’s Strange Situation).

17
Q

How is Ainsworth’s Strange Situation culturally biased?

A

It used white American middle-class infants and mothers, decreasing the generalisability of the study.

18
Q

How can culture bias be avoided?

A

-Cross-cultural approach.
-Transcultural approach.

19
Q

What is cross-cultural approach?

A

Study of different cultures to identify the variations.
