Gender Bias - AO1 Flashcards
What is gender bias?
the differential treartment or representation of men and women based on steriotypes rather than real differences
What is andocentric bias?
a dominantly male persective
this causes psychological theories to represent a male world-view
What are the types of gender bias?
- alpha
- beta
What is alpha gender bias?
- an androcentric bias where the difference between male and females are exaggerated
- this causes the devaluing of one gender over the other
What is an example of alpha gender bias?
Freud’s psychosexual approach where he suggest that girls identify with their mothers because they have penis envy.
This presents femininity as failed masculinity.
What is beta gender bias?
- a bias where the differences between males and females are minimised
- this means one gender’s view is considered and are used to explain the other
usually it’s the male view that is considered
What is an example of beta gender bias?
The fight or flight response supposedly only considers how men respond to stressful situations.
However, according to Taylor et al, that is not the case and women follow a ‘tend and befriend’ response instead.
