What is alpha gender bias?

A
  • an androcentric bias where the difference between male and females are exaggerated
  • this causes the devaluing of one gender over the other

What is an example of alpha gender bias?

A

Freud’s psychosexual approach where he suggest that girls identify with their mothers because they have penis envy.

This presents femininity as failed masculinity.

What is beta gender bias?

A
  • a bias where the differences between males and females are minimised
  • this means one gender’s view is considered and are used to explain the other

usually it’s the male view that is considered

A

The fight or flight response supposedly only considers how men respond to stressful situations.

However, according to Taylor et al, that is not the case and women follow a ‘tend and befriend’ response instead.
