gender bias Flashcards
androcentrism refers to things that are
male centred
leads to gender bias
universality refers to a theory that
applies to everyone of gender or culture
gender bias threatens
universality , as if a theory is androcentric , as it misrepresents women
thus does not apply to everyone
alphas bias exaggerates
the differences between men and women to the detriment of one gender usually women
an example of alpha bias is
Freuds psychoanalytical theory which judged women as morally inferior to men , superego = underdeveloped and idenditfy with their mother during electra complex in a weaker way then boys/father do in oedipus complex
beta bias minimises
the differences between men and women to the detriment of one gender , usually women. it assumes that what is true for men is also true for women or vice versa
a weakness of gender bias perpetuates negative stereotypes which disadvantages women in the workplace especially but also in life , women who
break the stereotype are often labelled in derogatory ways compared to men , by all genders
for example a women asking for a promotion may be labelled as overconfident but a man would be labelled as ambitious
an example of beta bias is
the early research conducted into biological stress responses was only undertaken on male animals , and it was assumed that the fight or flight claimed universality
however later research discovered the female tend and befriend stress response
beta bias led to researchers ignoring differences between men and women
another weakness is that researchers argue that institutional sexism may exist in psychological research , senior researchers are more likely
to be men so questions relating to women may not even be conceived , male researchers are also more likely to have their work published , perpetuating a male dominated viewpoint
another weakness is that a 1960s study found that make experimenters were more pleasant, friendly and encouraging to female participants than to male participants with the result that
male participants appeared to perform less well on the tasks assigned
however other studies have suggested that lab exp disadvantage women because the controlled conditions tell us little about the experiences of women outside the lab conditions
a strength is that it promotes feminist psychology , combatting gender bias feminists reccomened that women should not be the object of research bur rather participate in it , callabrative with
research methods , collecting qualitative data rather than quantitive , would also help reduce gender bias because researchers would have to spend time and effort understanding womens experiences
