gender bias Flashcards
gender a01/ context
historically psych has been male dominated and many theories reflect this. male bias is so endemic that if female voice heard it has been minimised/judged
two types of gender bias
- alpha
- beta
alpha bias
focus on differences so exaggerates them
example of alpha bias
frueds pscyhodyanmic approach- phallic stage, boys fear castration identify with father to resolve it girls do it by identifying with mother-weaker therefore girls morally inferior as mothers have weaker personality
beta bias
ignores/underestimates differences so assume findings equally apply to both, illustrates how leads to misrepresentations of womens behaviours
examples of beta bias
milgram- soley males yet still applies his research to female behaviour despite excluding women. therefore conclusions about why obey cannot apply to women
androcentric
male centred view/male bias, men’s behaviour is standard against which women’s behaviour is compared
evaluation points
- far reaching implications for women in everyday life eg male is hierarchal role women for childcare
- reflexivity- recognise effect of values
- gender diffs presented as fixed/enduring. ie research shows girls have superior verbal ability
- social sterotypes of women better at multitasking true- brain better connections
