Gender Bias Flashcards
What is gender bias
Gender bias is the differential treatment or representation of men and women based of stereotypes rather than real differences
What is alpha bias
Alpha bias is the tendency to exaggerate the differences between men and women. The consequence of this is that it tends to devalue one gender over the other
What is an example of alpha bias
An example of alpha bias is in attachment, bowlbys monotropic theory, which states that women are more central in caregiving compared to men. The research emphasises that the role of the father involves play whereas mothers are more nurturing
What is beta bias
Beta bias is the tendency to ignore or minimise differences between men and women
What is an example of beta bias
The fight or flight response in biopsychology assumes that it applies to women.
Taylor et al (2000) found that women have a tend or befriend response instead
AO3 for Gender bias
- One way to counter gender bias is to develop theories that exaggerate the value of women.
- Beta bias has given women greater opportunities, however it still has disadvantages.
- Reverse alpha bias describes the development of theories that show a greater emphasis on women - Cornwell et al
