Gender and Theology Flashcards
Warrior Messiah
Ruether
The Davidic Messiah is what the Jews expected Jesus to be, the personification of a masculine war hero who would defeat the Romans and be the rule of God on earth.
Servant king
Ruether
The Jesus that they actually received instead of the one we got, ‘He was expected to win, not to suffer and die’. He served the people rather than ruling over them e.g. he washes his disciples feet (John 13:1-17)
‘Sophia’
Ruether
The Greek female wisdom principle and a quality that God possessed that was replaced with the male ‘Logos’ to fit the male Jesus (The Word), originally God (ruach) was both male and female.
Logos
Ruether
The new interpretation of ‘Sophia’ - The Word as associated with the male Christ
Abba
Ruether
The informal way that Jesus referred to God, rather than ‘father’ it translates more as ‘dad’ or ‘daddy’
Women Church

Ruether’s idea of a new Christian movement without patriarchy open to all
Be-ing
Daly
A way of referring to a higher power (replacing god) without the stigma of gender, uniting women with nature
Spinsters
Daly
Previously a derogatory term used by men to refer to widows Daly adapts it as a way for women to spin a new spirituality.
Woman should be “radically deviant”.
Unholy Trinity
Daly
Rape (rapism), war and genocide.
The idea that Christianity was created on a rape and this culture is reflected and encouraged in men and society.
‘Phallic mentality’
Daly
The promotion of male values which use violence to gain power.
Quintessence
Daly
An essence or spirit of being that permeates through all nature, allowing us to find life and love from nature.
Thealogy
Daly (a word that she created)
Reflection on the divine as feminine and using feminine terminology; usually associated with the goddess.
Transvaluation
Daly (another new word by her)
Daly’s idea to completely abandon Christianity and morality instead of trying to transform it into something because this morality has allowed for traditions such as honour based killing.
