Gender and subject choice Flashcards
Peer pressure
Negative pressure applied on subjects outside of the male gender domain eg dance
Boys tend to opt out of choosing these subjects due to others opinions
Early socialisation
For example boys and girls have different tastes in reading and these can lead to different choices
for example boys tend to read hobby books which develops an interest in the sciences whereas girls read stories about people which can lead to an interest in English.
Gendered career opportunities
Employment remains gendered and this gender stereotyping of occupations affects boys and girls ideas about what kind of jobs are possible and acceptable
Eg boys see nursing as a woman’s job and so this affects the subjects chosen
