Gender and sexuality Flashcards
Suggest how Des is like Brab’s possession.
Iago tells Brab that he has been “robbed” of Des, putting her in the same catagory as his ‘house’ and ‘bags’. Brab continues this, addressing Othello as a ‘foul thief’ and Des as a ‘jewel’.
Suggest how Des is like Othello’s possession.
When he suspects she’s being unfaithful he tries to reassert his control over her both verbally and physically. He mourns his lack of control over her behaviour: “we can call these delicate creatures ours/and not their appetites!”
Suggest how Bianca is like Cassio’s possession.
He expects her to obey him, using orders to speak to her: “Take it, and do’t, and leave me”. He sees her as an insignificant object - a “bauble”.
Suggest how Emilia is like Iago’s possession.
He controls her behaviour, giving her instructions which she obeys, even though this conflicts with her loyalty to Des (e.g. when she steals the handkerchief).
