Q

Maracle, I am Woman

A

This reading, from an indigenous women’s perspective, posits that there is a hierarchy in society that takes into account many variables.

Indigenous people are below white people and women are below men. So the hierarchy goes white man, white woman, indigenous man, then indigenous women.

This demonstrates intersectionality against indigenous women, as their mix of race and gender almost dehumanizes them, and makes them feel like they are at the very bottom of the social hierarchy.

She calls herself a slave to the white colonial society.

Q

Hill Collins & Bilge, Intersectionality

A

Intersectionality: investigates how intersecting power relations influence social relations across diverse societies as well as individual’s experiences in everyday life.

  • it views categories of race, class, gender, sexuality, nation, ability, ethnicity and age as interrelated and mutually shaping one another

African American women faced the intersectionality of gender, race, and class so no social movement by itself could address the entirety of discriminations they faced.

This reading focuses on what intersectionality does not what it is.

Intersectionality does not fall equally on women, children, people of color, differently abled people, transgenders people, undocumented populations, and indigenous groups.

To explain economic inequality, intersectionality focuses on race, gender, and age to shift how we think about jobs, income, and wealth.
