- To be born with any combination of sexual characteristics such as gentals, hormones, etc
- Almost 2% of the world’s population is intersex

What is Gender:
- Gender refers to the social classification of feminin and masculine
- Certain thoughts and behaviors are associated with each gender
- Gender expectations and roles can and do change
- Some cultures have more than two genders
What is sex?
- The difference between male and female sexes are anatomical and physiological
- Sex tends to relate to biological differences
- Sex of an individual is defined by genetic factors
- Based on biology (can not be changed/ man consider sex to be based on a continuum)
Expendability theory
Men are more expendable (of less significance) than women and therfore men should take on the more dangerous and harmful jobs
Division of Labor Theory
Women give birth to live young which take up a lot of time and resources. So, women care exclusively for young and the men do not
Proximity to residenc theory
Women give birth to live young who are vulnerabl and require care and monitoring. Since the woman is now tethered to the home, she may as well take on domestic tasks while men take on more external tasks

- Mimick mensturation is part of becoming Hijara
