Social constructivist perspective

3. g. gender socialisation theory
Gender socialisation theory
females become women through a process where they acquire feminine traits and learn feminine behaviour
“gender is performative”
- not stable
- sequence of actions
- experience of womanhood is not universal
hegemonic masculinity
- the way of “doing” gender that is most valued in our society
- a culturally idealised form of manhood
- being assertive, aggressive, bread winner
complicit masculinity
someone who admires and doesn’t challenge hegemonic masculinity even if they themselves don’t fit into it
emphasised femininity
idea that women must conform to the needs and desires of men
people who conform to hegemonic masculinity
- are rewarded by society
- have better access to power and status in society
- obvious disadvantage women
- also disadvantages men (real men aren’t meant to cry)
- those who don’t conform face discrimination
