What is androcentrism?
taking male thinking/behaviour as the accepted norm.
Regarding female thinking/behaviour as defiant, inferior or abnormal when it is different.
What is the opposite of androcentrism?
Gynocentrism.
How has androcentrism come about?
The male domination of psychology throughout its history.
What is an example of androcentrism in psychology?
Freud, oedipus complex disregards females completely.
What is alpha bias?
exaggerating or overestimating the differences between men and women
What can happen is there is an alpha bias?
If we assume there are differences between the genders (an alpha bias), one gender may be devalued.
What is an example of an alpha bias in psychology?
Freud’s psychodynamic approach = fixations and stages, just doesn’t apply to females.
In particular, phallic stage, women do not have a phallus.
= alpha bias = androcentric
