Gender And Crime: Why Women Commit Less Crime: Control Theory Flashcards
Heidensohn: domestic control
In the home, women are typically responsible for housework/childcare; lack financial independence- have no time to commit crime nor the resources as they are too busy with the household. There is also too much to risk in committing crime such as losing the family
Bedroom culture
Spending time inside more so they may not be able to go out + commit crime
Public control
Women fear male violence, they will not put themselves in risky positions as they do not want to get hurt. Women care more about their public relationship more than men, so they will not want to ruin this by obtaining a criminal record
Workplace control
Women face a glass ceiling, less likely to progress in their career, women are policed by sexual harassment in the workplace - men look down on them so they are less likely to commit white collar crime
