Define gender.
A social construct that determines the norms related to one’s sex.
Define gender fluid.
Where a person’s gender identity (the gender they identify with most) is not fixed.
Define androgyny.
Androgyny is the possession of both masculine and feminine characteristics.
Define gender dysphoria.
A feeling of mismatch between one’s biological sex and their gender identity which can create a sense of unease.
How does culture influence on gender?
- Peer pressure is high for boys in western culture because of differing values placed on masculine and feminine traits.
- Girls are allowed more flexibility in displaying masculine traits seeing as these traits are more valued more than feminine traits (e.g. independence).
What age can children supposedly identify whether they are a boy or girl?

Describe peer influences.
They have preference for playmates of the same sex (gender schema theory). The more time spent with the same sex peers, the more effect it has on gender identity. They compare themselves to theory peers to judge their typicality. The individual has time to reflect on their self-image, self-esteem, and preferred gender category.
What is gender typicality?
The perception that one is a typical member of his or her gender, with skills and interests that are similar to those of same-gender peers.
