Stage 1- age 2-3.5

Stage 2- age 3.5-4.5
Gender is consistent over time but not across situations. Appearance is still a factor

Stage 3- age 6
Gender is constant across time and situations. Gender appropriate behaviour

A

At the age of 4 children begin to realise that their sex will not change over time- this shows that they have acquired gender ability

A

Approximately 6 years children appreciate that other people have different point of view from their own. They realise that everyone’s gender is constant and that changes in outwards appearances do not influence whether someone is male or female (conservation)
